Conference // Lisbon 2020 // CfP deadline postponed

April 27, 2020

Due to the pandemic situation, the ICDAD board decided to postpone the deadline of the annual call for conference papers to June 30, 2020.

As this is a rapidly-evolving situation, it is not possible to provide advice about travel in the near future. Also, we do not know what the financial situation in the museums will be after shorter or longer periods of closedown. For the moment we have decided to go on planning the conference in Lisbon on October 14-16, 2020. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in the round of call for papers and would like to inform you that alternatives are considered currently for the conference timing and format. You will be informed by the end of May about all possible changes in the plans.

Stay safe!

Call for Papers:

REVIVALS.
Reconsidering the Past in Decorative Arts and Design

The 2021 Annual Conference and General Assembly of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Decorative Arts and Design (ICDAD) will take place virtually, from 21 October to 23 October 2021.*

Revivals image

Revivals are socio-cultural phenomena that have occurred many times over history, seeking to revisit principles and traditions of times gone by. In this conference we approach the idea of revivals through the lens of decorative arts and design.

We welcome presentations on revivals within the decorative and applied arts and design practices throughout centuries and worldwide regions. We also include the retro design and material culture of the 20th and 21st centuries, referring to the resurgence of old yet relatively recent decorative arts and design phenomena.

How is heritage used, valued, and reconsidered, from the perspective of artists, designers, or society? We are interested in the examples, phenomena, and notions that reflect upon the present’s relation to the past, treating it with both unsentimental and sentimental nostalgia, or introducing ways of dealing with the recent past from different periods in history.

How to apply

Papers should be 20 minutes in length and include a visual presentation component (Powerpoint, Google Slides, etc.). Presenters will also have the opportunity to publish their papers in a post-conference publication organized by ICDAD.
